Living in Pasadena, we pride ourselves on being the "Strawberry Capital," but we also know this city runs on hard work. Whether you are clocking in for a shift at the plants along the Ship Channel, attending classes at San Jacinto College, or managing a household in Golden Acres, there is a pervasive "keep pushing" mentality here. It is the engine that drives our local economy, from the industrial districts to the small businesses on Southmore Avenue.
But sometimes, that drive to keep going masks a heavier burden. You might be waking up in Vista Villas or Deepwater feeling a weight in your chest that coffee can’t fix. You might be driving down Red Bluff Road, going through the motions of your day, while feeling completely disconnected from the people you love.
I am Anamile Guerra, a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate, and I provide online counseling to help residents of Pasadena and the surrounding areas navigate the fog of depression. You don’t have to carry that weight alone, and you certainly don’t have to drive into Houston to find support.
When "Just Keep Going" Stops Working
Pasadena is unique. We are a blend of deep historical roots and heavy industry. Many of the people I work with are part of the workforce that keeps the energy sector moving. But the reality of shift work, the pressure of turnarounds, and the constant hum of industry can take a toll on your mental health.
Depression here often doesn't look like staying in bed all day. In a hardworking community like ours, it often looks like high-functioning exhaustion. You might still be showing up for your job at the refineries or the school district, but inside, you feel hollow. You might find yourself snapping at your spouse for small things, withdrawing from your friends, or feeling a sense of dread as the sun goes down over the Beltway.
It is common to feel like you have to be strong for everyone else. Maybe you are the first in your family to go to college, or you are supporting aging parents. That pressure can make asking for help feel like a weakness. I want you to know that acknowledging you are struggling is actually the first step toward reclaiming your strength.
Why Telehealth Fits the Pasadena Lifestyle
One of the biggest barriers to therapy is simply finding the time and energy to get there. If you live in El Jardin del Mar or near Strawberry Park, the last thing you want to do when you’re struggling with depression is fight traffic on Highway 225 or sit in a gridlock on I-45 to get to a therapist’s office.
I offer telehealth services because I believe mental health support should fit into your life, not complicate it.
- Sin desplazamientos: You can attend your session from the privacy of your home, your parked car during a lunch break, or anywhere you feel safe and comfortable.
- Privacidad: In a tight-knit community, sometimes people worry about running into someone they know in a waiting room. Online therapy offers a layer of confidentiality that many of my clients appreciate.
- Flexibility: Whether you are a student, a shift worker, or a stay-at-home parent, we can often find a time that works around your schedule, not against it.
A Bilingual Space for Healing
Pasadena is a vibrant, culturally diverse city, and for many families here, Spanish is the language of the heart. I am fluent in both English and Spanish, and I understand the cultural nuances that come with being part of a Hispanic or Latino family.
Sometimes, depression is tied to family expectations, generational gaps, or the specific stressors of acculturation. It can be incredibly difficult to express these deep emotions in a second language. In our sessions, you are welcome to speak the language that feels most natural to you. We can switch between English and Spanish as needed to ensure you feel fully understood.
Understanding Your Depression
Depression is more than just sadness. It is a complex interplay of your biology, your environment, and your thought patterns. In our work together, we will look at how these different areas are affecting you.
You might be experiencing:
- Persistent emptiness: A feeling that nothing matters or that you are just "floating" through life.
- Loss of interest: Things you used to enjoy—like heading to the Strawberry Festival or fishing at Armand Bayou—just don’t seem appealing anymore.
- Physical symptoms: Unexplained aches, changes in appetite, or disrupting sleep patterns (which is already a challenge for shift workers).
- Irritabilidad: Feeling easily frustrated or angered by small inconveniences.
Mi enfoque en la asesoría
I work under the supervision of Jennifer Gonzalez, MS, LPC-S, and Amanda Varnon, MA, LPC-S. My goal is to create a safe, non-judgmental space where we can unpack what you are going through.
I don’t believe in a "one-size-fits-all" solution. Instead, I draw from several evidence-based approaches to tailor our sessions to your needs:
Terapia cognitivo-conductual (TCC)
Often, depression is fueled by negative thought loops. You might be telling yourself that you are a failure, that things will never get better, or that you are a burden. We will work together to identify these patterns and gently challenge them, replacing them with more balanced, realistic perspectives.
Person-Centered & Positive Psychology
You are the expert on your own life. My role is not to "fix" you, but to walk alongside you. We will focus on your strengths—the resilience that has gotten you this far—and use them as a foundation for growth.
Terapia Breve Centrada en Soluciones (SFBT)
While it is important to understand the root of your pain, we also want to look forward. We will collaborate to set small, achievable goals. These aren't about changing your life overnight; they are about finding small wins that help you regain a sense of control and hope.
Finding Calm in a Busy City
Pasadena is a place of movement. Between the traffic on Spencer Highway and the industrial activity, it can feel loud. Part of our work in treating depression is finding your internal version of the Armand Bayou Nature Center—a place of quiet, preservation, and natural flow amidst the concrete and steel.
We will work on coping strategies that you can use in your daily life. This might involve mindfulness techniques to ground you when stress hits, or communication skills to help you reconnect with your family. The goal is to build a toolkit that serves you long after our sessions end.
You Don't Have To Do This Alone
If you are in Pasadena—whether you’re in the historic districts, the new developments near the beltway, or anywhere in between—and you are feeling the weight of depression, I invite you to reach out.
It takes courage to admit that "just keeping on" isn't working anymore. But you deserve to do more than just survive your week; you deserve to feel present, connected, and hopeful.
I offer a consultation so we can chat briefly, discuss what you are looking for, and see if we are a good fit. I would be honored to support you on your journey toward a more balanced and fulfilling life.
