Terapeuta LatinX

Living in the Texas Panhandle comes with a unique kind of resilience. There is a sense of grit here—a “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” mentality that runs deep, from the historic streets of Route 66 to the quiet, expanding neighborhoods out toward Bushland. The wide-open horizons and big skies can be beautiful, but for many, they can also feel isolating, especially when you are carrying the invisible weight of trauma or PTSD.

I’m Anamile Guerra, a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate. I offer online counseling services to residents of Amarillo and the surrounding Panhandle area. My goal is to help you navigate the difficult terrain of trauma without you having to leave the comfort and privacy of your own home.

The Weight of “Toughing It Out” in the Panhandle

Amarillo is a city built on hard work and community. Whether you are working long shifts in the medical district, keeping up with the demands of the industrial sectors, or managing a household in Bivins or Wolflin, there is often an unspoken pressure to keep going, no matter what.

Trauma, however, doesn’t respond to “toughing it out.”

When we think of trauma, we often picture soldiers returning from war—and while I deeply respect and support our veterans—trauma is actually much broader. It can stem from a car accident on I-40, a difficult childhood, a sudden loss, or high-stress work environments that leave your nervous system constantly on edge.

You might feel like you’re stuck in a loop, reliving painful memories, or conversely, feeling completely numb. You might notice that your patience is shorter with your family, or that you’re avoiding places that used to bring you joy, like weekend trips to Palo Duro or grabbing a bite on 6th Street.

If this sounds familiar, I want you to know that you don’t have to carry that burden alone. Healing is not about weakness; it’s about regaining control of your story.

Why Online Therapy Fits the Amarillo Lifestyle

While I am based in the Houston area, my practice is entirely virtual for clients in Amarillo. Over time, I have found that telehealth offers specific advantages that resonate with the lifestyle in the Panhandle.

Unmatched Privacy

Amarillo is the kind of place that feels like a big city but often operates like a small town. In neighborhoods like The Colonies or Sleepy Hollow, it can feel like everyone knows everyone.

For many of my clients, the idea of walking into a local counseling office is anxiety-inducing. You might worry about running into a colleague, a neighbor, or a church member in the waiting room. Telehealth eliminates that concern completely. You can access support from your living room, your parked car during a lunch break, or a private office, ensuring your mental health care remains confidential.

Consistency Despite the Elements

Anyone living in the Panhandle knows that the weather can be unpredictable. From the fierce winds that sweep across the plains to the sudden winter freezes that make the commute down Soncy or I-27 treacherous, getting to an in-person appointment isn’t always easy.

Online counseling removes the commute. You don’t have to worry about road conditions, traffic construction, or losing travel time. This consistency is vital for trauma work, as regular sessions help maintain momentum in your healing process.

Flexible for Shift Work

Amarillo has a 24-hour heartbeat, with many residents working non-traditional hours in healthcare, manufacturing, or emergency services. If you work nights or 12-hour shifts, finding a therapist with office hours that match your downtime can be a logistical nightmare. Telehealth offers a level of flexibility that fits into a busy, real-world schedule.

My Approach: A Safe Space to Unpack

Trauma often convinces us that the world is unsafe or that we are broken. In our sessions, my primary job is to create a safe, judgment-free environment where we can challenge those beliefs.

I work under the supervision of Jennifer Gonzalez, MS, LPC-S, and Amanda Varnon, MA, LPC-S. My therapeutic style is grounded in person-centered therapy, which means I believe you are the expert on your own life. I am not here to “fix” you, but to collaborate with you.

We will move at your pace. We might use techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to look at how certain thought patterns are fueling your anxiety. We might use Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) to identify the strengths you already possess—that West Texas resilience—and apply them in new, healthier ways.

Bilingual Support (Hablo Español)

I am fluent in both English and Spanish. I know that Amarillo has a rich, diverse culture with a significant Spanish-speaking population, particularly in neighborhoods like the Eastridge area or the North Heights.

Language should never be a barrier to mental healthcare. There are nuances to expressing pain, grief, and hope in your native language that sometimes get lost in translation. If you feel more comfortable navigating your emotions in Spanish, or in a mix of both languages (Spanglish), I welcome that fully.

What Does Healing Look Like?

Recovery from trauma and PTSD isn’t a straight line. It’s not about erasing the past—that’s impossible. Instead, it’s about processing the past so that it no longer dictates your future.

Through our work together, we can aim for:

  • Reduced Hypervigilance: Learning to relax your nervous system so you aren’t constantly scanning for danger.
  • Better Sleep: Addressing the nightmares or insomnia that often accompany PTSD.
  • Reconnection: Feeling safe enough to engage with your loved ones and your community again.
  • Emotional Regulation: Developing tools to handle triggers without spiraling into panic or shutting down.

Whether you are a student at Amarillo College feeling overwhelmed, a professional dealing with burnout, or a parent trying to break generational cycles, there is a path forward.

Vamos a conectarnos

Taking the first step is often the hardest part, especially in a culture that values self-reliance. But you don’t have to white-knuckle your way through life.

I invite you to reach out. I offer a supportive, confidential space where we can discuss what you are going through. Whether you are ready to dive deep into trauma work or just want to see if we are a good fit, I’d love to hear from you.

Let’s work together to help you find your footing again.
