Terapeuta LatinX

Living in Brownsville, we often pride ourselves on our resilience. There is a unique strength in the Rio Grande Valley—a deep connection to family, culture, and community that defines life here “On the Border, By the Sea.” whether you are studying at UTRGV, working hard at the Port, or raising a family in Southmost, there is a pervasive sense that we keep pushing forward, no matter what comes our way.

But that same resilience can sometimes make it difficult to admit when we are hurting. In our culture, there is often an unspoken rule that we should keep our problems to ourselves or that being “strong” means silently enduring pain.

If you are struggling with past experiences, flashbacks, or a constant sense of being “on edge,” you don’t have to carry that weight alone. My name is Anamile Guerra. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate, and I provide online trauma and PTSD counseling to help residents of Brownsville find balance and healing without having to leave their homes.

When the Past Affects Your Present

Trauma is complex. When people hear “PTSD,” they often think only of military veterans returning from combat. While that is certainly a valid and serious form of trauma, the reality is that trauma can stem from many different life experiences. It is not about what happened as much as it is about cómo your mind and body processed it.

Living in a border city comes with its own unique set of stressors, and life in Brownsville is changing rapidly. I talk to people from all walks of life—from long-time residents in West Brownsville to newcomers working near Boca Chica—who are feeling the impact of difficult experiences.

You might be seeking support for:

  • Single-incident trauma: A car accident on I-69E, a workplace injury, or a specific frightening event.
  • Complex trauma: Ongoing stressful situations, such as difficult family dynamics, childhood emotional neglect, or long-term relationship issues.
  • Cultural and generational stress: The pressure to succeed as a first-generation student, navigating immigration-related anxiety, or breaking cycles of behavior that have been passed down through your family.

Trauma often changes how you view the world. You might feel like you are always waiting for the next bad thing to happen. You might find yourself avoiding certain places—like avoiding the crowds at the Mitte Cultural District or feeling panic when driving down busy streets like Boca Chica Boulevard. Alternatively, you might feel numb, disconnected from your loved ones, or exhausted from trying to pretend everything is okay.

Why Telehealth Works for Brownsville

One of the biggest hurdles to seeking therapy in the Rio Grande Valley is privacy. Brownsville is a big city with a small-town feel. It seems like everyone knows everyone. If you grew up here, you probably can’t go to the grocery store or a restaurant without running into a cousin, a former teacher, or a colleague.

For many of my clients, the idea of sitting in a local waiting room and risking being seen by someone they know adds unnecessary anxiety.

Online counseling removes that barrier completely. I offer telehealth sessions throughout Texas, which means you can access professional support from the privacy of your own bedroom, office, or even your parked car during a lunch break.

There are also practical benefits to meeting online:

  • Sin desplazamientos: You don’t have to fight traffic on the Expressway or get stuck waiting at a train crossing downtown just to get to an appointment.
  • Comodidad: Processing trauma is hard work. Being in your own space, with your own blanket or a cup of coffee, can make it easier to open up.
  • Flexibility: Whether you are a student at UTRGV juggling classes or a professional navigating a busy shift schedule, online therapy allows us to fit sessions into your life more easily.

A Bilingual Space for Healing

I am a graduate of UTRGV and hold a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I understand the local culture because I have lived and studied within it.

One of the most important aspects of my practice is that I am fully bilingual in English and Spanish. I know that for many families in Brownsville, language is fluid. You might speak English at work or school but speak Spanish with your parents or grandparents.

When we are processing deep emotions or painful memories, it is vital that you can express yourself in the language that feels most natural to you. In our sessions, you are welcome to speak English, Spanish, or a mix of both (Spanglish is absolutely welcome here). You should never have to mentally translate your feelings before speaking them.

My Approach to Trauma Counseling

I work under the supervision of Jennifer Gonzalez, MS, LPC-S, and Amanda Varnon, MA, LPC-S. My goal is to create a safe, confidential environment where you feel heard, not judged.

When working with trauma, we don’t just dive into the deep end immediately. We move at your pace. I draw from several evidence-based approaches to help you reclaim your life:

Person-Centered & Supportive

First and foremost, our relationship is a partnership. I am not here to tell you what to do; I am here to help you uncover your own strengths. We will work collaboratively to create a space where you feel safe enough to explore difficult thoughts.

Terapia cognitivo-conductual (TCC)

Trauma often creates negative thought loops. You might think, “It was my fault,” or “I’m never going to be safe.” We use CBT to identify these unhelpful thought patterns and gently challenge them, helping you view your situation with more clarity and compassion.

Terapia Breve Centrada en Soluciones (SFBT)

While it is important to understand the past, we also want to improve your present and future. SFBT helps us focus on what is working, what resources you already have, and what small, practical steps we can take today to help you feel better tomorrow.

Moving Forward

You might be feeling stuck right now, but you are not broken. The anxiety, the sleepless nights, or the avoidance behaviors you are experiencing are often your brain’s way of trying to protect you. Together, we can help your brain understand that the danger has passed so that you can start living fully again.

Whether you are dealing with recent stress or old wounds that have resurfaced, healing is possible. You deserve to enjoy your life, your family, and your community without the shadow of trauma hanging over you.

Conéctate conmigo

Taking the first step is often the hardest part, especially in a culture that values toughness. But asking for help is an act of courage, not weakness.

I work with adults (18+) throughout Brownsville and the wider Texas area. If you are ready to begin your journey toward healing—or if you simply want to see if we are a good fit—I invite you to reach out.

I’d love to hear from you. Let’s work together to help you find your footing again.
