Living in the “Oasis of West Texas” comes with a unique sense of pride. There is a specific resilience here in San Angelo, from the historic strength of Fort Concho to the hardworking spirit that keeps our local industries running. But I also know that living in a tight-knit community—where you might run into your neighbor at the H-E-B on Sherwood Way or see a colleague while walking the Concho River trails—can sometimes make it harder to seek help for personal struggles.
When you are dealing with trauma or PTSD, that feeling of being “on display” or worry about who you might see in a waiting room can become a barrier to getting the support you deserve.
I’m Anamile Guerra, a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate. I offer online counseling specifically for residents of San Angelo and the surrounding Concho Valley. My goal is to provide a private, safe space where you can process painful experiences without the fear of judgment or the stress of a commute.
When the “Oasis” Feels Lonely
San Angelo is geographically isolated—we all know the saying about being “three hours from everywhere.” While that distance preserves the city’s independent character, it can also mirror the internal isolation of trauma.
Trauma has a way of making you feel separated from the people around you, even when you are standing in a crowd at the Rodeo or sitting in a busy classroom at Angelo State University. You might feel hyper-aware of your surroundings, constantly scanning for danger, or perhaps you feel numb, struggling to connect with the vibrant life of the city around you.
I work with adults who are navigating these complex feelings. Whether your trauma stems from a specific event, a difficult childhood, or the cumulative stress of a high-pressure career, you do not have to carry it alone.
Why Online Therapy Works for San Angelo
One of the biggest concerns I hear from clients in mid-sized cities like San Angelo is privacy. In a town of this size, everyone seems to know everyone.
Telehealth allows us to bypass the local “fishbowl” effect entirely.
- Total Privacy: You don’t have to worry about parking your car at a local clinic or sitting in a waiting room where you might be recognized. You can attend sessions from your bedroom, your office, or anywhere you feel secure.
- Sin desplazamientos: You can skip the traffic on Loop 306 or the congestion on Bryant Blvd.
- Comodidad: Processing trauma is difficult work. Doing it from the safety of your own home, with your own blanket or pet nearby, can sometimes make it easier to open up.
Understanding Trauma and PTSD
Trauma isn’t just about what happened to you; it’s about how your body and mind responded to it. You might notice:
- Intrusive Thoughts: Memories that pop up when you’re trying to focus on work or relax at Lake Nasworthy.
- Evitación: Staying away from certain places, like crowds at the River Stage or specific neighborhoods, because they trigger anxiety.
- Síntomas físicos: A racing heart, tight chest, or difficulty sleeping.
In our work together, we won’t just “talk about it” endlessly. I use evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) to help you understand these reactions. We will work on practical coping strategies to help lower that sense of constant alarm, aiming to help you reclaim your life and your peace of mind.
Culturally Sensitive & Bilingual Support
San Angelo is a diverse community with deep roots. I am fluent in both English and Spanish, and I understand the importance of being able to express your deepest emotions in the language that feels most natural to you.
I also recognize the unique pressures that come with life in West Texas, whether you are part of the military community connected to Goodfellow AFB, a student trying to find your path, or part of a family that has been ranching or working in the area for generations. My approach is Person-Centered, meaning I respect your background, your values, and the pace at which you are comfortable moving.
