Living in the "Key City" often means being part of a community that values resilience, friendliness, and hard work. Whether you are stationed at Dyess, studying for finals at one of our three universities, or raising a family in the growing Wylie area, there is often a spoken or unspoken expectation to keep moving forward.

But sometimes, "keeping on" feels impossible. You might find yourself smiling through a Sunday service or waving to neighbors at the H-E-B on Buffalo Gap Road, all while feeling a profound sense of hollowness inside.

If you are struggling with depression, you are not the only one feeling this way. I am here to tell you that you don’t have to carry that weight alone. My name is Anamile Guerra, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate offering online therapy to residents of Abilene and the surrounding Big Country.

When the "Big Country" Skies Feel Gray

Abilene has a unique rhythm. We have the tight-knit feel of a small town with the sprawl of a much larger city. From the historic charm of the Sayles Boulevard district to the newer developments springing up near the loop, life here can be full. But that fullness often brings specific pressures.

I often speak with individuals who feel disconnected, even when they are surrounded by people. In a city known for its churches, community events, and Friday night football, admitting that you are struggling can feel like you are failing. You might worry that feeling down makes you ungrateful or weak.

Depression is not a flaw in your character. It is not a lack of faith, and it isn't something you can simply "snap out of" by working harder. It is a complex mental health condition that affects your thoughts, your body, and your spirit.

Recognizing the Signs

Depression looks different for everyone. For some, it is an overwhelming sadness that makes it hard to get out of bed. For others, it manifests as irritability, numbness, or a constant sense of fatigue that no amount of coffee can fix.

You might notice:

  • Loss of Interest: Hobbies you used to love, like visiting the Abilene Zoo or catching a show at the Paramount, just don't seem appealing anymore.
  • Sleep Disruption: You might be sleeping all day or staring at the ceiling at 3 AM.
  • Physical Heaviness: A feeling that moving your limbs requires immense effort.
  • Isolation: Withdrawing from friends and family, perhaps avoiding calls or skipping gatherings.
  • Hopelessness: A persistent thought that things will never improve.

If you recognize these feelings in yourself, reaching out is the bravest thing you can do.

Why Online Therapy Fits Abilene Life

One of the challenges of seeking help in a mid-sized city like Abilene is the "small town" effect. It seems like everyone knows everyone. You might be hesitant to walk into a counseling clinic on South 14th or near the hospital district for fear of running into a colleague, a church member, or a neighbor. Privacy is a valid concern.

Telehealth eliminates that worry.

By working together online, we create a confidential space that exists entirely on your terms. You can attend your session from your parked car during a lunch break, from your dorm room, or from the comfort of your living room in Lytle Lake.

Convenience Without the Commute

While traffic here isn't like the metroplex, driving from the north side down to the south side via Winter Creek or the Loop can still take time out of your day. Online counseling removes the commute. It makes therapy accessible for:

  • Dyess AFB Personnel and Families: I know the military lifestyle comes with unique stressors, from deployment cycles to the challenges of reintegration. Telehealth offers a consistent anchor even if your schedule is unpredictable.
  • University Students: Whether you are at ACU, Hardin-Simmons, or McMurry, academic pressure and the transition to adulthood can be overwhelming. Online sessions fit easily between classes.
  • Busy Professionals & Parents: If you are working in the medical district or managing a household, finding two hours for travel and a session is hard. Telehealth allows us to focus on the work without the logistical hassle.

My Approach to Healing

I am a bilingual counselor (English and Spanish), and I work under the supervision of Jennifer Gonzalez, MS, LPC-S, and Amanda Varnon, MA, LPC-S. My goal is to create a therapeutic relationship where you feel truly seen and heard.

I believe that therapy should be a collaborative process. I am not here to tell you what to do or to give you a checklist of fixes. Instead, I walk alongside you. I use a mix of evidence-based approaches to help you navigate your depression.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Often, depression is fueled by a loop of negative thoughts. We might tell ourselves we aren't good enough or that the future is bleak. I use CBT to help you identify these patterns. We look at the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and work on reframing those thoughts into something more balanced and realistic.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

While it is important to understand where your pain comes from, it is also vital to look forward. SFBT is about identifying your strengths—and if you are living with depression, you are stronger than you realize. We will look for what is working in your life, even in small ways, and build on those successes to create a path toward your goals.

A Culturally Competent Space

I know that Abilene has a vibrant Hispanic population. Language and culture are deeply tied to how we process emotions. If you feel more comfortable expressing yourself in Spanish, or if you want to discuss how your cultural background influences your mental health, I provide a space where that is fully welcomed.

What to Expect in Our Sessions

Starting therapy can feel intimidating, especially if you have never done it before. You might worry that it will be awkward or that you won't know what to say.

In our first session, we will just talk. I want to get to know you—not just your symptoms, but who you are as a person. We will discuss what life looks like for you right now, whether that involves work stress, relationship struggles, or just a general sense of being "stuck."

We will move at your pace. Some days you might want to dig deep into the root causes of your feelings. Other days, we might focus on practical coping strategies to help you get through the week.

My role is to provide a safe, non-judgmental container for whatever you are bringing to the table.
