Living in the "City of Five Hills" offers a unique blend of experiences. There is a specific rhythm to life here in Copperas Cove. For many, it is a place of transition—whether you are attached to the military rhythms of Fort Cavazos, settling down for retirement near Ogletree Gap, or raising a family in the quiet subdivisions of House Creek North.

But even in a community known for its resilience and close-knit feel, carrying the weight of past experiences can be isolating. Trauma and PTSD don't care that the view from Skyline Valley is peaceful or that the town is growing. When you are grappling with difficult memories, anxiety, or hypervigilance, your internal world can feel chaotic regardless of your surroundings.

I am Anamile Guerra, a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate. I offer online counseling services to help adults across Texas navigate the complex terrain of trauma and PTSD. My goal is to provide a space where you can process your experiences safely, without the need to battle traffic on Highway 190 or sit in a crowded waiting room.

When the Past Impacts the Present

In a town like Copperas Cove, where the community is so deeply intertwined with service and duty, the word "trauma" often brings combat-related PTSD to mind immediately. While I certainly work with individuals navigating those challenges, trauma is a broad spectrum. It is not exclusively defined by a battlefield.

Trauma can stem from a singular overwhelming event, such as a car accident on the bypass or a sudden loss. It can also be the result of enduring, chronic stress—difficult childhood environments, abusive relationships, or long-term workplace harassment.

You might find yourself feeling "stuck" in survival mode. This can look different for everyone:

  • Avoidance: You might stop going to places that remind you of the event, or you might avoid your own emotions by staying overly busy.
  • Hyperarousal: You may feel constantly on edge, easily startled, or irritable, even when you are safe in your home in The Narrows or Turkey Creek.
  • Intrusive Thoughts: Memories or flashbacks might interrupt your day or keep you awake at night.
  • Numbness: Sometimes, the only way to cope feels like shutting down completely, making it hard to connect with your spouse, children, or friends.

If this sounds familiar, I want you to know that you do not have to carry this weight indefinitely. Therapy is not about erasing your past; it is about processing it so that it no longer dictates your future.

Why Online Therapy Suits Life in "The Cove"

Copperas Cove has a distinct character. It is often quieter than Killeen or Harker Heights, a quality that residents usually cherish. However, accessing specialized mental health care often means commuting into the bigger cities.

By offering telehealth services, I aim to bridge that gap. Online counseling fits into the reality of life here.

Privacy and Comfort

In a community this size, it can sometimes feel like everyone knows everyone. Whether you are shopping at the H-E-B on East Hwy 190 or grabbing coffee locally, running into neighbors is common. For many of my clients, the idea of walking into a local clinic and sitting in a waiting room feels too exposed.

Telehealth allows you to attend sessions from the privacy of your own bedroom, office, or even your parked car during a lunch break. You control your environment. This is often crucial for trauma work, where feeling safe and secure is the foundation of our progress.

Avoiding the Commute

While the construction on the bypass aims to help, traffic along the 190 corridor can still be a major source of stress, especially during shift changes at the base. If you are already dealing with anxiety or PTSD, the last thing you need is a stressful drive before or after a vulnerable therapy session. With online therapy, the only commute you have is logging in.

My Approach to Healing

I believe that therapy is a collaboration. I am not here to tell you what to do or to "fix" you, because you are not broken. Instead, I walk alongside you as we explore the thoughts and feelings that are holding you back.

I work under the supervision of Jennifer Gonzalez, MS, LPC-S, and Amanda Varnon, MA, LPC-S. In our sessions, I draw from several evidence-based approaches to tailor our time together to your specific needs.

Creating a Safe Harbor

My primary approach is person-centered. This means I prioritize empathy, genuineness, and unconditional positive regard. Trauma often breaks down our sense of trust—in others and in ourselves. Rebuilding that trust within the therapeutic relationship is often the first step toward healing. Whether you are living in a historic home near Avenue D or a new build out toward Kempner, our digital space is yours to use however you need.

Tools for Change

We often use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to examine the relationship between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Trauma can create rigid thought patterns (e.g., "The world is unsafe," "It was my fault"). Together, we can gently challenge these thoughts and develop healthier coping strategies.

I also utilize Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and positive psychology. While it is important to process the pain, it is equally important to identify your strengths. You have survived up to this point because you are resilient. We will identify what is working for you and build upon those existing strengths to move you toward your goals.

Servicios en Español

Copperas Cove is a diverse community. I am fluent in both English and Spanish. If you feel more comfortable expressing your emotions in Spanish, or if you want to navigate cultural nuances that are hard to translate, I can provide that support. Language should never be a barrier to quality mental health care.

Moving Beyond "Just Coping"

Many people in Copperas Cove are tough. Whether it’s due to the military influence, the hardworking nature of the region, or simply the Texan spirit, there is often a pressure to "suck it up" and keep moving.

But there is a difference between surviving and living. You might be functioning—going to work, taking care of the kids, mowing the lawn—but inside, you might feel hollow or exhausted.

Counseling offers a pause button. It is a time set aside specifically for you to take off the armor. We can work on grounding techniques to help you manage anxiety in the moment. We can explore the narrative of your life to help you make sense of what happened. Most importantly, we can work toward a place where your past experiences are a part of your story, but not the entire definition of who you are.

A Note for Residents

I know that reaching out for help is a significant step. It takes courage to admit that things aren't okay, especially in a culture that values self-reliance.

Whether you are a long-time resident who remembers when the city was much smaller, or you have recently arrived and are trying to find your footing, you deserve support. You do not have to wait until you are at a breaking point to seek counseling.
