Living in “The Hub City,” you understand what it means to be at the center of everything. From the constant flow of produce trucks crossing the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge to the rapid growth along I-2, Pharr is a city that never really stops moving.
But sometimes, that constant motion makes it easier to run from the things that hurt.
If you are struggling with past trauma or PTSD, you might feel like you’re carrying a heavy weight while everyone else is just busy getting on with their lives. You may be keeping busy—working long shifts in logistics, focusing on your family in Las Milpas, or just trying to navigate the daily grind—hoping that if you stay busy enough, the memories or anxiety will fade.
I’m Anamile Guerra, a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate. I provide online trauma counseling to help residents of Pharr stop running and start healing, all from the comfort and privacy of their own homes.
When “Moving Forward” Feels Impossible
Trauma leaves a mark that doesn’t just go away with time. Whether it stems from a single painful event, a difficult childhood, or the accumulated stress of life on the border, untreated trauma can change how you see the world.
You might notice:
- Hypervigilance: Feeling on edge, like you can never fully relax, even when you’re safe at home in South Pharr.
- Avoidance: Driving miles out of your way to avoid specific places that trigger bad memories, or pulling away from friends and family.
- Flashbacks: Intrusive thoughts that make you feel like you’re reliving the past.
- Numbness: Feeling disconnected from your spouse or children, like you’re watching your life happen from behind a glass wall.
In the Rio Grande Valley, we often have a “saddle up and keep going” mentality. But true strength isn’t about enduring pain in silence; it’s about having the courage to face it.
Why Online Therapy Works for Pharr
Let’s be honest: the traffic around the I-2 and I-69C interchange is a nightmare. The last thing you need when you’re dealing with anxiety or trauma is to sit in gridlock construction traffic on Cage Boulevard or struggle to find parking at a clinic.
Telehealth removes those barriers.
- Skip the Commute: No navigating the interchange or getting stuck behind 18-wheelers coming off the bridge.
- Total Privacy: There’s no chance of running into a tía, a coworker, or a former classmate in a waiting room. You can meet with me from a private room in your house, your parked car during a lunch break, or anywhere you feel safe.
- Comfort: Process difficult emotions in your own space, with your own blankets, pets, or comfort items nearby.
A Space for You (In English, Spanish, or Spanglish)
I know that in many Hispanic families, there is a lingering stigma that “la ropa sucia se lava en casa” (dirty laundry is washed at home). You might feel guilty for speaking to an outsider about family struggles or personal pain.
I want you to know that therapy is not about airing dirty laundry or betraying your family. It’s about healing the parts of you that are hurting so you can be more present for the people you love.
As a bilingual therapist and a UTRGV graduate, I understand the unique culture of the Valley. I speak fluent Spanish and English, and I welcome “Spanglish” in our sessions. If you can only express certain feelings in Spanish, or if you need to switch back and forth to find the right words, I am right there with you. You never have to translate your heart in my sessions.
My Approach to Healing Trauma
I don’t believe in a “one size fits all” approach. We will move at a pace that feels safe for you. I am supervised by Jennifer Gonzalez, MS, LPC-S, and Amanda Varnon, MA, LPC-S, and I use evidence-based methods to help you regain control.
- Creating Safety: First, we establish coping skills so you can manage anxiety in the moment.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): We look at how trauma has shaped your thoughts and behaviors, gently challenging the negative beliefs that keep you stuck.
- Person-Centered Care: I offer a judgment-free space where you are the expert on your own life. My role is to walk alongside you, not to push you before you’re ready.
- Solution-Focused Techniques: We will identify your existing strengths—the resilience that has gotten you this far—and use them to build the future you want.
You Don’t Have to Carry It Alone
Whether you are living in the historic neighborhoods near downtown, raising a family in the PSJA school district, or working in the bustling commercial areas north of the highway, you deserve peace.
Trauma steals your ability to be present in the moment. Therapy helps you take it back.
